Spring is around the corner, I just know it.  The crocuses peeking up at me from garden beds, the hummingbirds swooping to defend their real estate in our backyard, the goldfinches and black-capped chickadees gobbling thistle seed from our feeders and busily building nests in the cozy houses hanging in our backyard trees - how can it not be?  But wait, it's only the first week of February! 
 
The beautiful early spring weather has me excited for new life, too.  This has always been such a powerful time of year for me.  Being born on the Spring Equinox gave me a strong start.  While new things in life most often mean change, I've learned to embrace these transitions to get to the other side of the new, get help when I need it and accept the loss of what was old in the process.
 
Our Mentorship Program and the work Portlandia Club Mentors do with their Mentees actively illustrate this spring "metamorphosis".  The Mentors offer an ear and listen as their Mentees bring new ideas forward toward their own growth.  They offer other help through our Mentor Resource Group.  As Mentees breath new life into their ideas, their Mentors support them through their transitions, ultimately allowing them to achieve success.  And, the Mentees aren't solo in gaining from this program, for it often empowers Mentors equally.
 
My hope is for you all to enjoy the wonderful sounds, sights and smells of Springtime as you go through your days.  Could you also assist another woman in her metamorphosis?  How about offering your strengths as a resource to other Mentors navigating those new ideas with their Mentees?  Think about it as you smile back at the sun on your next walk, taking in all of the new life around you...

Scholarship Fundraisers

 

Each year Portlandia donates to a variety of organizations that support women and children in our community.  
 
Our members have found ways to raise money individually. Member Mary Golden is offering an opportunity to purchase beautiful jewelry  from Fifth Avenue Collection and support the scholarship fund at the same time on Wednesday, Feb 17th @ 5:30.

  Speaker Says, "Walk Though Life Fearlessly"
           A Special Luncheon for Mentees 
                       March 4th 2010
 
What's holding you back?  We all have our self-limiting fears.
Our March speaker has overcome personal and physical challenges to become an international business leader. Hewlett-Packard V.P. Katherine Durham will tell us how we can overcome our fears and challenges that limit our success. 
 
As the Vice President of Marketing for Hewlett-Packard's Imaging and Printing Group, Durham is responsible for building the HP brand from Canada to Latin America.  Since 2000, Durham has held a number of executive positions in Hewlett-Packard.  Before that she was the general manager for a unit in Mattel that developed software titles for Barbie, Hot Wheels and American Girl.  She also served as vice president of marketing for a multi-media software company and a social networking site for teen girls. 
 
She has worked in public relations, local government in Washington State and as a Peace Corps teacher in Thailand.
 
Ask your mentee to RSVP to Pam Mason at pamela.mason@comcast.net by Thursday, February 25, if she plans to attend.  Please remind her that if it she cannot make this commitment, to let Pam know by Monday, March 1 at noon or the Mentoring Program will be charged for her lunch.

Portlandia will be purchasing two patron tables at the Celebrate Success event, benefiting Dress For Success Oregon, on April 30, 2010.  You have two ways to attend this great event: You may purchase a ticket at the low, low, price of only $30 through Portlandia for a savings of $95 from the single ticket price of $125.00! Or, even better, you may be one of 5 lucky women to win a "Seat at the Table" this year.

Win a seat, you say?  How might I do that?  It is simple, easy, and a great opportunity to invite your friends to join you in the best women's organization in Portland, bar none.  Each time you recruit a new member to Portlandia your name will be entered into a drawing for a seat at Celebrate Success.  We will draw *two winners in February, one in March, and two in April!

                      Generous Portlandia Donors

 I am totally thrilled with your generous response to my request for donations to the gift basket(s) from Portlandia for the Celebrate Success Silent Auction on Friday, April 30.
 
Several logistical requests:
* Please start bringing your donations to our luncheons so I can start collecting them as soon as possible.
* If you are donating money, please make your check payable to Portlandia Club, Inc.  We'll use monetary donations to add other items to the basket or perhaps pay for some of Kay Herr's expenses in putting the basket together for us.
* When you make a donation, I'll give you the donation form used by Dress for Success for this event.  I will keep them all and use them to make a list of all the items in the basket(s).

The Portlandia Facebook page is for club members and non-members to learn about the activities & events our Club is offering.

            You Can Change a Woman's Life
 
What if just nine of us took nine minutes a week to change the lives of nine women?
 
Nine.  That's how many eager women from the Dress for Success Professional Women's Group raised their hands asking for a mentor at a recent mentee orientation session.
 
As those who participate in the Better Together mentor program have discovered, you can have a significant impact on a mentee's life by simply having a monthly phone conversation with her for, say, 36 minutes.  Can you spare the time?  Think of how easy it can be to build confidence, self-esteem and success in another woman.
