Bellvue Garden

Last week at our monthly luncheon we heard about Katherine Durham's success in business despite her physical challenges.  I found her outlook so positive and she really offers this same energy to others when she speaks.

Katherine shared with us her parents' belief in not only miracles, but the necessary efforts she needed to participate in ("pull your wheelchair up to the sink and grab a towel!") to become the woman she is today.  Overcoming obstacles seemed less painful for her with their support and influence as she navigated challenges in both her personal and professional development.

At this same meeting last week we honored mentees and their mentors presently participating in the program through the Professional Woman's Group at Dress for Success.  I had the pleasure of meeting and visiting with a few of the mentees and hearing some of their stories made me both sad and happy at the same time.

Even though these women had been through some negative times in their lives, they were also able to talk about extreme joy and gratefulness .  Both women echoed the support and insights they'd gained from their mentors and truly couldn't say enough great things about what they continue to get from the experience.  Thank you mentors!

I am proud to belong to Portlandia Club and actively participate in our efforts to help in our mission addressing & assisting other women less fortunate and with a few more obstacles to overcome than I ever did.  Please consider becoming a mentor - or joining me in our call to action for our upcoming fundraising activities!

                                 Speakers Wanted

The Community Transitional School is one of the organizations that Portlandia has contributed to through our scholarship fund. They are an awesome organization providing educational services to children who are homeless or otherwise at risk of school failure.

Speakers are invited to visit the school and talk to the class about what they do the weeks of April 19-23 & 26-30.  Marna likes to get people in a variety of occupations speak to the class. Remember these kids have parents who basically don't work or have failed at work, so they have no role models at home for how to get a job or how to succeed at one.

Marcia Harris, their development coordinator, says it really important for them to see and hear from successful business women (besides their teachers, of course)!

You can contact Marna Tisdel at tisdel@teleport.com. Thanks for making a difference!

Francine Won!!!  Whoo Hoo!

A coveted Orchid Award will be presented to our own Francine Read at the Women in Business Awards Luncheon.  Francine is the owner of Voices, Inc. a popular lecture series.  If you can attend to support Francine, the details are below.

921 SW 6th Ave
Portland OR

You Can Change a Woman's Life

What if just nine of us took nine minutes a week to change the lives of nine women?

Nine.  That's how many eager women from the Dress for Success Professional Women's Group raised their hands asking for a mentor at a recent mentee orientation session.

As those who participate in the Better Together mentor program have discovered, you can have a significant impact on a mentee's life by simply having a monthly phone conversation with her for, say, 36 minutes.  Can you spare the time?  Think of how easy it can be to build confidence, self-esteem and success in another woman.
