Greetings!
How wonderful is it that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world. - Anne Frank
Speaker Helps American Abuse Victims Overseas
Paula Lucas lived what appeared to be an ideal life overseas with her Newsweek photojouralist husband and three sons. Their social network included government ministers and wealthy and powerful Middle Eastern businessmen. But little did the outside world know that she and her sons suffered severe domestic violence. Her desire to escape was hindered by her husband hiding their passports. Neither her family nor even the U.S. State Department were of any help. The story of her eventual escape to the United State is frighteningly dramatic and awe-inspiring. In 1999, she published a website to assist other women suffering abuse overseas. Over the past 10 years, she has developed a nonprofit organization to aid these victims. The American Overseas Domestic Violence Crisis Center received 2289 crisis calls last year. Paula has appeared in national and international magazines as well as radio and TV programs, including the Today Show. On September 1, she will address the Portlandia Club members at our monthly luncheon. Don't miss her.
 | Lucas has received national recognition and awards highlighting her groundbreaking work through the Americans Overseas Domestic Violence Crisis Center. |

President's Letter August 2011
I have just returned from a family vacation in the Redwoods. It had been years since I had been through them, and the Redwoods themselves were never a destination, just an interesting place to pass through on my way to other places, people, or experiences.
How different they were as a destination! It is profoundly quiet inside the groves of trees. They are amazingly adaptable and long-lived, and able to survive incredible trauma. I had seen them but knew very little about these beautiful trees. I also found myself feeling much more peaceful and centered just walking through or sitting with the trees. I came back feeling renewed and energized and ready to take on challenges at work and in life as they come up.
Given some time to think I realized that throughout my life I have perceived many events, people, and places differently based on whether I am just "passing through" or see them as a destination. Once I view anything as a destination I have a different purpose for being there. I ask more questions, I notice detail that I would have missed, I become familiar and interested in the person or event and I care about them much more. I find a new level of commitment from that closer look. The greater my level of commitment, understanding, and interest, the more I receive back.
I hope that each of you find a way to make your time with Portlandia a destination and not just a place you are passing through. I think you will get so much more from joining and helping build the club than you might from just coming to an after hours or a lunch. If you need more information about committees or how you might actively engage, you can call me at 503-464-6058.
Hope to see you at lunch next month!
Marilyn Mays President 2011
