Creating New Communities: From Economist to Senior Visionary
Vassar Byrd didn’t know that delivering Meals on Wheels would turn her life upside down. The economic analyst was so taken with the senior citizens she was meeting that she decided to expand her volunteer work to become a long-term care ombudsman for the state.
That is where she got a good look at the state of long-term care for seniors and just how bad some facilities can be.
That got her dreaming about creating a really special place to really highlight the lives of the seniors who live there. The dream became an obsession that lead to a complete career change.
Today she is he Chief Executive Officer at a visionary senior community in southwest Portland called Rose Villa. Under her direction the 50-year-old community is undergoing a complete makeover.
In Vassar’s October 6 presentation to Portlandia, she will talk about her journey and her vision for how senior living can look in the future. She is the last speaker in the year in our on-coming series of Women Making a Difference.
