The Grotto, National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother

One of Portland’s most popular tourist attractions is this 62-acre Sanctuary in Northeast Portland. The Executive Director of The Grotto will provide a private tour for Portlandia Club members, including the Upper Gardens where there are many unique works of art and installations. Our host, Chris Blanchard, will share inspiring history and entertaining stories with us.
The Mission of The Grotto is to offer a sanctuary of peace, prayer, and natural beauty for all people. The words of its dedication in 1924 still ring true today: “Let this be a sanctuary of peace for all peoples of the earth and surely in this day a sanctuary is needed. Torn with differences, strife, and grief, the world needs sanctuary where the human spirit can seek peace and consolation.”
In 1983 the shrine was designated a National Sanctuary. Through the years, more than ten million visitors have marveled at The Grotto’s serene environment. Today, staff and volunteers continue to welcome people from around the world, people of all faiths and no faith. Visitors speak of the peace they experience here in the spiritual and natural beauty of this sanctuary.
Sunday religious services are offered in the outdoor plaza during the summer months. Those wishing to join that experience can come early. Recitation of the rosary begins at 11:30 am followed by Mass at 12 noon.
The Grotto is a self-supporting 501(c)3 non-profit organization and thrives on support from donors. A renovation of the chapel has been accomplished during the period of COVID 19 closure and has recently been re-opened to the public.
